Based on the announcement of Hanoi Medical University on postgraduate studies application and examination for the academic year of 2023 – 2025, the School of Preventive Medicine and Public Health (SPMPH) is pleased to invite qualified and interested candidates to apply for a place in the full-time International Master of Public Health program (Cohort 8, 2023 – 2025), commencing around October 2023.

Program Overview

The full-time Master of Public Health International Program at Hanoi Medical University, first established in 2015, is designed to train a new generation of competent public health researchers and practitioners. The program offers three areas of specialization for students to develop their diverse interests and capacities: 1) One Health and Public Health; 2) Health Economics; and 3) Reproductive Health. The areas of specialization build on inter-disciplinary learning and teaching methods to establish a strong foundation for professional development in both national and global environments. The program offers two tracks – Master of Science in Public Health and Master of Applied Public Health – with the former emphasizing developing the capacity to carry out public health research while the later developing the capacity to carry out public health interventions.

As a graduate of our Master of Public Health International Program, you will be equipped with the knowledge and analytical skills to raise your professional profile, to apply different perspectives to address issues in public health, health economics and policy, reproductive health and to deepen your participation in ongoing conversations about key issues in global health. Completing this program, you will earn a Master degree in Public Health, awarded by Hanoi Medical University, as well as learn and flourish in a multicultural environment.

To fulfill the requirements of the program, students must complete eleven (11) compulsory courses and four (04) elective courses, as well as complete a capstone thesis (either in the form of a research-based thesis for a research-oriented track or a project-based thesis for an applied track). In the final thesis, students will be able to pursue their own topics of interest, and investigate a question or problem of their choice.

Training duration: 18 months (Oct 2023 to May 2025)

Tuition fee: 5,250 USD (converted to Vietnamese Dong at the time of first payment). A limited number of merit-based scholarships are available for selected students. Students are also supported to apply for scholarships from other sources.

Eligibility and Admission Criteria

Applicants from any country are eligible for the program and should have the following prerequisites:

• For Master of Science in Public Health Track, applicants must:

+ Holding a Bachelor’s degree ranking at Good level and above in Public Health, Preventive Medicine, Medicine, Traditional Medicine and do not need scientific research publications.

+ Holding a Bachelor’s degree ranking at Average and Average-Good level in Public Health, Preventive Medicine, Medicine, Traditional Medicine need to be an author (not necessarily primary/contact author) of at least one research publication published in a journal credited by the Vietnam State Council for Professorship at the time of publication (see the URL link for more information http://hdgsnn.gov.vn/ ). Published articles must be relevant to health sciences and be published within 36 months from the date of course application.

+ Provide a research proposal approved by potential academic supervisors as well as heads of Departments/the School. To help you in your search, our faculty websites are good places to start. • For Master of Applied Public Health Track, applicants must:

+ Holding or meeting the graduation requirements a Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Preventive Medicine, Medicine, Traditional Medicine, Pharmacology, Nutrition, Nursing-Midwifery, Odontology-Stomatology, Laboratory Technology, Health Management/Administration, Sport Medicine, Sociology, Anthropology, Economics, Education, Economic Statistics, Administration – Management, Psychology, Biology, Applied Biology, Environmental Science, Social Work, Resource Management, Environment and Veterinary Medicine

+ Completing 10 credits of supplementary course work in public health prior to the date of announcing shortlisted candidates for oral examination (see below) and have at least one years of health-related work experiences, for those with Bachelor’s degrees in Pharmacology, Nutrition, Nursing, Odontology-Stomatology, Laboratory Technology, Health Management/Administration, Sport Medicine, Sociology, Anthropology, Economics, Education, Economic Statistics, Administration – Management, Psychology, Biology, Applied Biology, Environmental Science, Social Work, Resource Management, Environment and Veterinary Medicine

• For both Tracks, proof of English proficiency: IELTS scores of 5.5 or equivalent international certificates accepted by the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET). (Native English speakers and those obtaining a Degree of Bachelor in English are waived of this requirement).

Application for admission

Applicants must submit:

1. A completed application form. Applicants can choose only one of the three Tracks
2. A letter from the current or most recent employer to certify work experience or a request to waive this prerequisite;
3. A cover letter outlining the reasons they want to enroll in the course;
4. An up-to-date curriculum vitae: Including general information, training process, work experiences, publications, and other skills related to public health…;
5. Notarized copies of Bachelor’s degrees;
6. Health certificate (To make sure that you can study at our university);
7. Official proof of English proficiency as stated above;
8. 2 current photos (3x4 cm) (have been taken within 03 months). Write your name and date of birth behind your photos;
9. Copy of ID card/passport.
10. Evidence of completing the supplementary course work in public health for those with Bachelor’s degrees listed above
11. A research proposal approved by potential academic supervisors or heads of Departments/the School and evidence of being an author of a journal article for those who are interested in the Master of Science in Public Health Track (If needed as above) (International applicants may submit the application by email: sdhyhdp@hmu.edu.vn).

Scholarships: It is anticipated that about 30 prospective students will be admitted for this 2023 - 2025 intake (20 for Master of Science in Public Health Track, and 10 for Master of Applied Public Health). There are a limited number of scholarships for international and Vietnamese applicants. Scholarships will be awarded based on the academic merits and competencies of candidates. Successful applicants are encouraged to seek outside scholarships, and the SPMPH is happy to provide letters of support.

Application fee: 20 USD (Applicants may pay cash or make a wire transfer at the time of submitting their application. International applicants will be given details for transfer after submitting the applications). This fee is non-refundable and does not guarantee admission.

Important dates

Time for online register: from 8:00am on May 5, 2023 to 4:30pm on May 12, 2023 (detailed instructions are available at the application portal website here and our postgraduate website here) . After successfully registering online, candidates will be provided with 01 profile code (also the candidate code, exam registration number, student code after matriculation) in the confirmation email of online registration.

Deadline for offline applications: 31 May 2023 (Application submission address: Room 111, 1st floor, Building A7, Hanoi Medical University, No. 1 Ton That Tung, Dong Da dist., Ha Noi.

Applications will be reviewed by the Admission Committee and only those shortlisted will be invited for oral examination with the Examination Committee.

Notification of shortlisted candidates: 9 June 2023

Oral examination appointments: 3-14 July 2023

(Face-to-face with Hanoi-based applicants; online with those living outside of Hanoi)

Final results : 18 July 2023

Offer of merit-based scholarships: end of August 2023

Deadline for confirmation of acceptance by candidate: five business days after the offer being made/sent to selected candidates.
