Summary:

Dr. Pham Quang Thai, Deputy head of the Department of Infectious Disease Control, National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE) appointed in 2011. Dr. Thai is an expert in vaccination and infectious disease surveillance with over 20 years of experience.

Dr. Thai graduated as a doctor from Hanoi Medical University, Master in Epidemiology from the University of Bergen, Norway with the support of the NORAD fund, and completed a doctoral program at the Open University, the United Kingdom in cooperation between the Oxford University and the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology. In addition to the work related to vaccination and epidemic prevention, Dr. Thai is also involved in research activities with research groups at home and abroad and is also involved in several phases of vaccine development and clinical trials.

With more than 20 years of working at the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, Dr. Thai has a close relationship with colleagues at regional Pasteur Institutes and Hygiene Institutes and also cooperates well with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of provinces, which are the backbone of Vietnam's preventive medicine system. Dr. Thai's work is related to the infectious disease surveillance system and rapid response against epidemics. Besides, he is also the epidemiology team leader of a number of projects such as the Oxford-NIHE project (Infectious Disease Research Development Program), anthrax and brucellosis surveillance project in the northern mountainous provinces of Vietnam on the basis of cooperation NIHE-UF (University of Florida - USA).

During the COVID-19 outbreak, Dr. Thai joined the rapid response information team under the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control as Deputy Leader. Dr. Thai's duties are to manage the SARS-COV-2 laboratory database and is a member of the national team of contact tracing.

Dr. Thai is also a visiting lecturer of Hanoi Medical University with over 12 years of experience in teaching statistics, medical informatics, and medical research. Dr. Thai was appointed as the Deputy Head of the Department of Research Methodology and Biostatistics in 2019. Dr. Thai has 8 books, over 40 national and 30 international articles published.
