Assoc. Prof. Pham Quang Thai, MD, PhD, is currently Deputy Head of the Department of Communicable Disease Control and Prevention and Head of the Northern Regional Expanded Programme on Immunization Office at the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology; he also serves as Deputy Head of the Department of Epidemiology, School of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, Hanoi Medical University. Assoc. Prof. Thai has more than 25 years of experience in infectious disease epidemiology, disease surveillance and outbreak response, vaccines, and immunization.
Assoc. Prof. Thai graduated as a medical doctor from Hanoi Medical University in 2000, completed a Master of International Health with a specialty in Epidemiology at the University of Bergen, Norway, in 2005 with support from NORAD, and earned a PhD in Epidemiology from The Open University, United Kingdom, in 2014 through the collaboration between the University of Oxford and the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology. He has participated in numerous national and international collaborative studies and has experience across different stages of vaccine development and clinical trials.
During more than 25 years at the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, Assoc. Prof. Thai has built a close collaborative network with regional Pasteur Institutes/Institutes of Hygiene and Epidemiology and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention across Vietnam. His professional activities focus on vaccines and immunization, infectious disease surveillance, rapid outbreak response, data management and analysis, modelling, and spatial analysis. Assoc. Prof. Thai has led or coordinated numerous collaborative studies, including bilateral scientific and technological cooperation projects under intergovernmental protocols, ministerial-level research projects, NIHE–Oxford programmes, and studies on anthrax and brucellosis in northern mountainous provinces in collaboration with the University of Florida, USA.
During the COVID-19 response (2020–2021), Assoc. Prof. Thai served as Deputy Head of the Ministry of Health's COVID-19 Information Response Team, participating in contact tracing and data management and overseeing laboratory information to support disease surveillance, analysis, and outbreak response.
Assoc. Prof. Thai has more than 15 years of experience in teaching, training, and supervising students in epidemiology, biostatistics, research methodology, vaccines, and immunization, and has been a lecturer at Hanoi Medical University since 2015. He served as Deputy Head of the Department of Research Methodology and Biostatistics from 2019 to July 2024 and was appointed Deputy Head of the Department of Epidemiology in August 2025. By 2026, Assoc. Prof. Thai had contributed to or served as editor/co-editor of more than 20 books, textbooks, and reference materials, and had authored or co-authored more than 150 scientific articles published in national and international journals.
